Blown to Bits pp. 309-316 & pp.73-77 Reflection (Homework- 9/13/17)

Homework:
    1. The Internet as System and Spirit, pp. 309-316 (The Internet Spirit)
      1. Answer the following questions: The layers of protocols used in network communication is an example of abstraction. Can you give other examples of abstraction in everyday life? When you browse to a web page, maybe with some animated advertisements embedded on it, describe in detail what happens behind the scenes to display that page on your browser.
  1. Ghosts in the Machine: Secrets and Surprises of Electronic Documents, pp. 73-77
    1. Question about abstraction: Discuss how not knowing some basics of how a software tool or computer works, and the abstractions they use, could lead to bad outcomes.

Blown to Bits pp. 309-316 & pp.73-77 Reflection:
  1. I think that the same concept of abstraction would be like a television monitor protocol because if we swap channels and games on a console/computer, it would allow commands to interact with our characters however we wish without knowing what they are exactly. You open a browser, the DNS gives me access to the the exact website by the website’s name or any important keywords. Every digit of an IP address represents where any information would need to go to. There is an IP address in every computer and website. Then, the TCP would allow me to have properly transfer specific types of information to display on the site such as text, and videos. Icons and visuals sent over are typically controlled by the computer’s Graphical User Interface (GUI).
  2. Without any prior knowledge of the internet, people can become victims to hacks due to the websites they were searching such as DoS attacks or hackers on the web gaining information that you typed on unsecured 3rd party websites. Your computer and personal information can be easily compromised if used without proper caution.
